The Cincinnati Reds
play in the Central Division of the National League. They have been
playing baseball since 1882 when they were first known as the
Cincinnati Red Stockings. They play their home games at Great American
Ball Park in Cincinnati.
The
Cincinnati Reds have played in the World Series 9 different times and
they have won 5 World Series Championships. Their first World Series
title came in 1919 when they beat the Chicago White Sox in 8 games.
They returned to the World Series in 1940 and beat the Detroit Tigers
in 7 games. In 1975 and 1976 with Sparky Anderson as head coach they
won back to back World Championships. They defeated the Boston Red Sox
in 1975 and they swept the mighty New York Yankees in straight games in
1976. They were known as the “Big Red Machine” during this
time period. In 1990 with Lou Piniella as head coach, they pulled off
another 4 game World Series sweep, this time against the Oakland
Athletics.
Some
of the most famous players that have ever played for the Cincinnati
Reds include Pete Rose, Tony Perez, Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk, George
Foster, Ken Griffey Jr. and Joe Morgan. These are some of the main
players that made up the “Big Red Machine” that was coached
by Sparky Anderson during their back to back World Series wins in the
70’s.
The
Red’s have had their share of greatness and controversy over the
years. In 1919 their World Series Championship victory was tarnished by
the “Black Sox Scandal” when members of the Chicago White
Sox were accused of fixing the Series by losing games on purpose.
Several years later Pete Rose was accused of placing illegal bets while
he was the manager of the team. At first he denied these allegations
but later admitted to placing bets on the Red’s to win games. |
