The Chicago Cubs have been playing Major League Baseball since 1870. They are one of the oldest pro clubs in Major League Baseball. They share this distinction with the Atlanta Braves who have been around for the same amount of time. The Cubs however are the oldest team that still plays in their original city.

They play in the Central Division of the National League and they play their home games at Wrigley Field which is located on the north side of Chicago. Wrigley Field was named after the Wrigley chewing gum company and is probably the first example of a ball park being named after a corporation.

The Chicago Cubs have been in the World Series 10 different times and they have won 2 World Series Championships. In 1907 they defeated the Detroit Tigers in 5 games and in 1908 they played the Tigers again and also won in 5 games. They have not won a World series title since.

There have been a few legendary stories attributed to the Chicago Cubs including the “Curse of the Billy Goat” in 1945 and the “Black Cat Incident” in 1969.

The “Curse of the Billy Goat” happened when Billy Sianis brought a goat to game 4 of the 1945 World Series at Wrigley Field. Him and his goat were kicked out of the park by the Cubs owner because he did not like the smell of the goat. On the way out of the park Sianis could be heard saying that the Cubs “ain’t gonna win no more”. The Cubs lost the World Series that year and they have not been back since.

In 1969 someone let a black cat onto the field when the Cubs were playing the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. Some fans believe that this brought the Cubs even more bad luck. Ron Santo was up at bat for the Cubs and the cat headed straight for him. It looked him in the eyes and then headed for the Cubs dugout. The Cubs not only lost the game that day, but they also ended up with a losing season that year. This has been called the "Black Cat Curse" or the "Black Cat Incident" or the "Curse of the Black Cat".

The Cubs have had several notable players on the team including Al Spangler, Dusty Baker, Ernie Banks, Lou Piniella, Ron Santo and Sammy Sosa to name just a few.

The Chicago Cubs now play their cross town rivals the Chicago White Sox each year in a series of games that has become known as the “Crosstown Classic”. Before the introduction of inter league play in 1997, the Cubs had never played the White Sox in a regular season game. Prior to 1997, the Cubs and Sox had only faced each other once. This was in the the 1906 World Series. The White Sox won the series 4 games to 2.
