The Boston Red Sox have
been playing Major League Baseball since 1901 and they have been
playing at Fenway Park since 1912. They play in the Eastern Division of
the American League. They have played in the World Series 11 times and
they have won 7 Worlds Series Championships including the very first
Series ever played in 1903. At that time they were known as the Boston
Americans. They defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 games to 3. (At that
time the series was a “best of 9 games” instead of the
“best of 7” that we have today.) They also won the World
Championship in 1912 against the New York Giants, in 1915 against the
Philadelphia Phillies, in 1916 vs. the Brooklyn Robins and in 1918 when
they defeated the Chicago Cubs.
They
would not win the World Series again for 86 straight years. In 2004
they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in 4 games. (This win less streak
is known by many as the “Curse of the Bambino” which refers
to the Red Sox selling Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1918. They
won the World Series again in 2007 in a 4 game sweep against the
Colorado Rockies.
There
have been several famous players that have played for the Red Sox over
the years including: Bill Buckner, Carlton Fisk, Carl Yastrzemski,
Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jason Varitek, Manny Ramirez Wade
Boggs
and several others. |
