The Arizona Diamondbacks played their first Major League baseball game against the Colorado Rockies on March 31, 1998 at Bank One Ballpark. Travis Lee can be given credit for getting the Arizona Diamondbacks first hit in the first inning. Lee is also credited with scoring the first home run for the D Backs as well as the first RBI. The Colorado Rockies ended up winning the game with a score of 9 to 2. The first game that the Diamondbacks actually won was against the San Francisco Giants on April 4, 1998. They ended up in last place for the 1998 season.

In 1999 the Diamondbacks made the playoffs and D backs pitcher Randy Johnson won the Cy Young award They ended up losing to the New York Mets in the series, but it was still an impressive accomplishment for an expansion team in only it’s second year.

In the 2000 season, Randy Johnson got his 3000th strikeout and won a second Cy Young award. The Arizona Diamondbacks also acquired pitcher Curt Schilling who would play a big part in helping the Diamondbacks win the National League pennant the following year.

The 2001 season became the best year yet for the Diamondbacks. Randy Johnson won his third Cy Young award and the Diamondbacks would become the world champions by beating the famed New York Yankees in the World Series. The Yankees had won the World Series the previous 3 years in a row, which put the odds of defeating the Diamondbacks heavily in the Yankees favor. However, after an action packed seven game series the Arizona Diamondbacks emerged victorious. Curt Schilling started game 7 against Roger Clemens of the Yankees who would be backed up by Mariano Rivera as closer.

Randy Johnson was put in to relieve Schilling in the 6th inning. After 9 innings, the Arizona Diamondback would end up winning the series and Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson share the MVP that year.

In 2002 Randy Johnson won his fourth straight Cy Young award. However the Diamondbacks came up short in the National League Divisional series when they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in three games. Johnson would later be traded to the New York Yankees and then reacquired by the Diamondbacks a few years later.
